I. McDougle letter to A. Estabrook, about new studies of race mixing in Virginia and need to rush publication of their own work (7/5/1925)

Sweet Briar College Sweet Briar, Va. Economics and Sociology Ivan E. McDougle #2 Plecker very kindly turned over his office records to me and while he was out one afternoon I proceeded to make use of his correspondence file with the aid of three of his stenographers. I found some letters from some of the "Isshies" notably [obscured] and [obscured] that ought to get a very prominent place in sime national magazine article. With the aid of some of these records I have written up a popular treatise on the Va. Racial Integrity Law that would even make you laugh after all the stories you have been hearing all these years. Some of the tales in connection with the Pamunkeys and the Chicakahominies are even better from an ethnological point of view. We must do something with this stuff and do it quick. If I dont[sic] hear from you soon I am going to take a couple of articles to New York on my own hook the last of the month. The psychological moment has arrived after all these months. Plecker last Saturday in a front page article in the Richmond papers pronounced all "Indians" in the state of Virginia "Negroid". Since then I have been busy clipping the papers and getting stenographic interviews from "kickers". His office was full of them Friday. Got around Plecker slick as a ribbon. Will tell you how I did it when I see you. We have the middle ground on this raging controversy and I have Plecker's word for it that our material is scientifically accurate according to his official records. If you want a copy of this book by Speck write to the address on the first page of this letter and they will mail you a copy. When I heard about it I wrote them and got one in three days but they have never answered by letter of inquiry about their future plans. Let me hear from you as soon as possible. Sincerely, [signed] Ivan E. McDougle 321 Monroe Hall Williamsburg, Va. [end]
