In the third generation of blindness, we find five cases of congenital cataract, two being the offspring of a blind father and partially blind mother (both having congenital cataract) and three of a blind father and a mentally defective mother. One of the five died in infancy but the remaining four have averaged nine years in a State School for the Blind. In addition to this physical defect, they are undesirable citizens, mentally and morally; two are considered subnormal with filthy habits and a lack of moral sense; a third is a criminal, glib, smooth and cunning, a sex offender, cruel to his children, who has attempted to pass bogus checks and to practice law without proper registration.
The four generation is made up of his offspring, three out of five having congenital cataract and one of those shows defective mentality. Two of the three are in special institutions for the blind.
The pedigree of congenital cataract which Nettleship has published, are well known in literature of this subject, one being exceptional in that the condition appears to descend through an unaffected member of the family. An interesting case illustrating the same point is reported in the Annals of Ophthalmology for April 1909. "Patient congenital cataract, six other children, normal eyes. Parent had normal eyes but several paternal uncles and paternal aunts had congenital cataract."
