Mr. Leon F. Whitney,
185 Church Street,
New Haven, Conn.
Dear Mr. Whitney;-
I am returning by express the sermons. I had intended to send them by Laughlin but he left today, Thursday. I spent about five hours on these sermons and have reached the following judgments;-
1, # 32,
2, # 37,
3, # 23.
Honorable mention: 5, 36, 43, 56 and 57.
I am free to say that I found the work of judging very difficult because of the entire absence of quantitative criteria. No measurements possible. The general impression may have been influenced by the preceding papers read, by mental fatigue or other circumstances.
I hope you will look me up when you come to Cold Spring Harbor.
Sincerely yours,
Chas. B. Davenport, Director.
