C. Davenport letter to L. Whitney about judging sermons

[printed letterhead] STATION FOR EXPERIMENTAL EVOLUTION Carnegie Institution of Washington DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS COLD SPRING HARBOR, LONG ISLAND, N.Y. EUGENICS RECORD OFFICE [end printed letterhead] February 17, 1927. Mr. Leon F. Whitney, 185 Church Street, New Haven, Conn. Dear Mr. Whitney;- I am returning by express the sermons. I had intended to send them by Laughlin but he left today, Thursday. I spent about five hours on these sermons and have reached the following judgments;- 1, # 32, 2, # 37, 3, # 23. Honorable mention: 5, 36, 43, 56 and 57. I am free to say that I found the work of judging very difficult because of the entire absence of quantitative criteria. No measurements possible. The general impression may have been influenced by the preceding papers read, by mental fatigue or other circumstances. I hope you will look me up when you come to Cold Spring Harbor. Sincerely yours, Chas. B. Davenport, Director. D/G
