Charles Davenport letter to Francis Galton, requesting a reference for his proposal for the Station for Experimental Evolution (10/14/1902)

Davenport 235 [stamped]University College London Galton Papers[end stamp] Oct. 14, '02 Dear Mr. Galton:-- Word has just reached me that it is possible that some action may be taken by the Carnegie Institution at a Board meeting in November in relation to my application for the Establishment of a station for the Experimental study of Evolution at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. The Board would be glad of any testimony relative to (1) the importance of such a station, (2) my qualifications as possible director and (3) the suitability of the locality. Of the last point of course you cannot speak but I feel that it would be a great help to the cause if you could find time to write a short letter concerning the importance of the station proposed [illegible] any thing concerning my equipment for the position that you may care to hazard. The establishment of the station is a thing I have much at heart and for which I am ready to sacrifice a great deal. Trusting that you will not feel my request too bold, I remain, Sincerely yours, Chas. B. Davenport. The letter head best be addressed to Dr. John S. Billings, Astor Library, New York, N.Y. who is chairman of the biological Committee - [end]
