Sermon #43: "e;Religion and Eugenics"e;

[page number] VI [end page number] breakers, hoboes and paupers than any other so-called civilized nation on earth? Moreover 290,000 insane crowd into our asylums and hospitals and over 2,000,000 weak-minded patients need institutional care. These insane and weak-minded are increasing constantly. While we boast rightfully of our fine students at Harvard, Yale and Princeton, and other universities and colleges, the smile goes from our face when we learn that America crowds more people into her insane asylums and institutions for idiots than she has in all the colleges and universities from Maine to California. I drop my head in shame when I behold 5,000,000 [the first figure of this number has been overtyped - it appears to be a "5" typed over a "6"]citizens, or inhabitants anyhow, of America who could not get through even the lowest grades of school, and behold 20,000,000 who do not have enough brains to get through grammar school! The average mental age in America drops to 13.2 years! Frightful as that sounds, the hordes from southern and south-eastern Europe, many millions in number, poison our blood-stream with traits of murder, incest, ignorance, and already have lowered the standard of living for our unskilled laborers; they are demanding the Continental Sabbath, and defy the Eighteenth Amendment and our Constitution. To be sure, we get an Italian or Greek sometimes who will uplift our art in America, but as a class they have lowered our standard of living and they breed murderous and lustful traits. I believe the time is ripe for our thoughtful citizens to quit shouting "Hurrah" at the vaporous boastings of many of our Fourth-of-July orators, and to get down on their knees to pray to the Almighty that he would turn aside the calamity which may overwhelm America because of our wide streams of dangerous blood flowing through our imperiled nation. But a third solemnizing fact, when we think of these coming generations, is this, the alarming growth of this dangerous blood.
