The Science of Eugenics vii
efforts to uplift the fallen and protect the weak - but it does most positively insist that we put forth at least an equal effort to encourage the production of larger numbers of the more normal, stronger and stable offspring of the better classes of society - those parents who are manifestly better from physical, nervous, mental and moral standpoints.
Eugenics Works Hand in Hand With Nature
Eugenics give honor and praise to nature's own tendencies. It puts a wise finger upon the place where nature is striving to restore and revive. It reinforces nature, as it were, by making the victory more complete.
Its Purpose is to Promote and Encourage the Marriage of Normal Young People
The Laws of Mendel, as applied to human heredity, have proven that feeblemindedness and kindred effects are directly hereditary.
Positive eugenics demand that, in every way possible by education, agitation, and legislation, we promote and encourage the marriage of normal young people and the increase in the size of the family on the part of the more desirable elements of society.
On the other hand, negative eugenics occupies itself with such education and legislation as would tend to decrease the marriage of degenerates, and still further toward those measures which look toward a decrease in the size of the family of those questionable and defective human beings who are already married; and still further to bring about either the segregation or sterilization of all members of society who are definitely, unmistakably, and eugenically unsound, defective and tainted.
